More about Finn & Kielder…

Kielder Observatory is a public outreach astronomical facility located in Kielder Forest in the North East of England in Northumberland. The site was chosen as one of the locations in the UK which has the least amount of intrusive light pollution.with some of the darkest skies in Europe and the third largest protected Dark Sky reserve in the world.

Finn says:

“A sky full of stars and a night spent in good company is everything I need to feel alive. For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by the sky and our place in it. We all want to know where we belong, how our life fits into the bigger picture, and so we fill our lives with stories and art, with song and dance, with tales of wonder and fantasy. Yet, to me, astronomy presents itself as the greatest story of all. A story every one of us shares. A story written not in fiction but a story of fact. How strange this tale plays out so far, filled with stars, galaxies, planets and us – the only characters we know of so far. I chased this narrative to Lancaster University, which opened up a few more chapters, and I graduated with a 2:1 masters degree in Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology before being lucky enough to join the Kielder team. And so, here for a while, under the dark Northumberland sky, I write my brief few lines into the great story of the sky, and I hope you can join me for a sentence or three. Who knows what the next page will be.”

Brief description of session:

Join us as we adventure into the night sky digitally with a tour of the constellations, and objects you can observe from your back garden. Starting with the basic questions, what is a star? Before moving into some astronomical history, and the importance of using constellations to navigate the skies and even our planet. And if it’s clear weather, take us outside and discover the night sky live!

Type of session:

Live tour of the constellations

Suitable for:
